too many

The Have You Seen Anna Mizunami site had been up for two weeks before Richard got the first unsigned e-mail.

"Do you really want to find her? Will you care if she doesn't want to find you? I've only been here a short time. I still remember. Maybe I can tell her its important that you know. Maybe I can tell her to e-mail you."

He called Greg, who traced it to an ISP who had gone out of business in early 1997.

The next hour came:

"WARNING! There are cranks on the internet! Pay no attention to those promising to help. They will only harm you in the long run."

Greg traced this one to a spammer in Ontario, who had been taken offline for pyramid schemes and mail fraud.

When Richard checked at midnight, he found:

"I got in touch with her, but she doesn't want to talk to you right now. She says everything is fine and that you shouldn't worry."

Greg could not trace this one at all. "There is something wrong with the account," he said. "It'll take some time to fix."
