That was just this summer-- just after their graduation from high school and before the dizzying freedoms of college. Anna had spent so much time in front of the computer that summer. "I'm too lost in the whirs of cyberspace" Anna had told her whenever Amy suggested going to a movie, hiking up to Emerald Lake, going to Buena Vista to raft down the Arkansas for a weekend, seeing the crowds at the People's Fair in Denver. By the end of June, Amy had stopped asking, and had not only grown used to but indifferent to the sight of her sister's slender shoulders hunched in over the keyboard.

Amy's whole body, it had seemed to Anna, had been immersed in the internet. Her long, straight black hair fell forward past her face to brush the keyboard as she typed, making an intertwined, fast moving jungle of hair, fingers, wrists. Only her eyes stayed still, fixed on the screen until the light from her eyes and the monitor merged into the same bright, flickering pattern.

Now Anna at least knew some of what Amy had been reading. Where her mind had been when her eyes knew only the light of the internet as real. Amy wondered about the words that had not been saved, about the spaces that had not been marked.
