Etymology: The origin of this symbol and spectrum
J is a relatively recent newcomer to the Rose shades of meaning. For some reason, I did not seem to need to denote secret and open, private and public, until I wrestled with sharing Rose with the world. Then I had a lot of battles about this in Rose, and needed a way to express the idea that there were things I did not want to share about who I am. My love wanted me to share my language. But my language really always has been my secret self. So, this was not an easy decision. Why j? Well, because all the popular letters were already occupied. When you write about secrets in Rose, you find yourself using words like “just” and “jimeny” and “jail” and “jeepers” and “jewel” a lot more than you would normally.
Orthography: How to remember these symbols
The “j” open as lines across, reminiscent of the e past and future. But these do not start at the top of the j-they are more in the middle. the more lines, the more open something is.
The “j” closed uses the same spiraling circle as b fear and rgood and bad memories. This indicates a circling in on oneself, a circumlocution.
Philosophy: How I use these symbols to embrace life
I sometimes write out the j secret and closed, then take an eraser and make the circle lines open. This exercise helps me think about what I want to share with others, what secrets I am willing to let go of—and what ones I will not share.
