Etymology: The origin of this symbol and spectrum
Life can be too complex, especially with my hobby of hypertext (overactive text, sort of like hyperactive kids only we pretend to make sense.) And Rose symbols add complexity.
Orthography: How to remember these symbols
Adding lines to the center of an ordinary x makes it more complex, as everyone wants to touch the heart of the matter. But adding lines outside of the x shows how simple this can be—we can just keep going in the four directions and we don’t have to keep muddling up the middle.
Philosophy: How I use these symbols to embrace life
If I want to simplify something, I draw the x and then think about each of the little “flares” around it—how can I cut this down to a simple 1, 2, 3, 4?
If I want to show how complex something is, I draw an x and then label the axes with portions of the problem—then I keep adding lines through the middle, with their neat labels at the end of each line. Like the old game of pick-up sticks, I can then explain, well, if you take this out of the equation, then this falls apart….
